StrengthsFinder Analytical Theme

What’s the Analytical Theme About?

The Analytical StrengthsFinder theme is marked by a truth-seeking orientation. They bring objectivity and clarity of thought to emotional issues, laying out the hard facts so that the team can make the soundest decision possible. They have the ability to look at a situation from multiple angles in order to determine all the factors that may be contributing to it, and they love to ask deep, penetrating questions as they sift out the root causes and issues.

Those with the Analytical StrengthsFinder theme challenge others to “prove it.” For them, taking a statement at face-value is a no-no; they must understand the reasoning and the data behind it. They search for the reasons why things are the way they are, and they want to understand how one thing affects another. When moving into a new project or train of thought, they break down the whole into smaller, more-easily-understood pieces so as to figure out how everything fits together. Because of their need to understand the substance of an issue, some may feel that they’re overly negative or unnecessarily critical, particularly if this theme is in its infancy. However, at its maturity, the genius of the Analytical talent theme is in their ability to bring a depth of thought and objectivity to the decision-making process, taking into account not only the hard facts of the situation but also the emotional influencers and needs of the team.

Analytical vs. Deliberative

The Analytical and Deliberative StrengthsFinder themes are similar in that both need time to think through situations before making their move. In a sense, both talent themes are driven to “look before they leap.” However, the motivation of the Analytical talent theme is in their need for data and hard facts; they insist that theories be sound and decision-making be based on verifiable research. The motivation of the Deliberative talent theme, on the other hand, is in their need for care and caution. They bring a thorough and conscientious approach in the face of uncertainty, and they assess these risks and lay them all out in the open, eliminating pitfalls one by one before they can happen. Furthermore, because the Analytical talent theme is in the Strategic Thinking StrengthsFinder Leadership Domain, the value-add they bring to the team is in the soundness of their decisions. In contrast, the Deliberative theme is in the Executing StrengthsFinder Leadership Domain, which means the value-add they bring to the team is in their ability to get things done in a meticulous and thorough manner.

Analytical vs. Positivity

The Analytical StrengthsFinder theme is what we call one of the polar opposites of the Positivity theme. They differ in one main way: because of its truth-seeking nature, Analytical tends toward skepticism, while Positivity with its hopeful and fun-loving nature tends toward staying optimistic. In the face of challenges, Analytical seeks to identify patterns and find simplicity in the midst of complexity so as to decide on the best course of action. Positivity, on the other hand, seeks to maintain a lighthearted and hopeful atmosphere for the team to keep their spirits up while navigating through difficulties. When these two themes are in their infancy stages, they are highly likely to clash; however, at their maturity, they are a powerful partnership because of their ability to lead the team with the combination of hope and truth.

Analytical vs. Command

The Analytical and Command StrengthsFinder themes are similar in that both desire clarity and objectivity. In relating to others, they may both come across as blunt and dispassionate. However, the Analytical theme is motivated by logic and an in-depth understanding of cause and effect, while the Command theme is motivated by emotional clarity and decisiveness. This difference is made clearer when we take a look at the way each theme naturally approaches a potentially volatile situation. When push comes to shove, Analytical will retreat and reassess the logic of the situation. They will break down the issues and find patterns in the midst of chaos so as to base their next move on clarity of logic. In contrast, Command will push back and take charge of an out-of-control situation. They create clarity through polarity — essentially, thinking through the most extreme scenarios — making sure everything is out in the open and nothing is swept under the rug as they decide on the best path forward.
